Sinusitis (ages 12 & over)

Sinusitis, commonly known as a sinus infection, occurs when the sinuses become inflamed and swollen. This condition is quite common and typically improves on its own within two to three weeks. However, if symptoms persist, treatment options are available to help speed up recovery.

When the sinuses become inflamed, their openings can get blocked, preventing proper mucus drainage. This congestion leads to feelings of pressure, discomfort, and a blocked nose. While most cases clear up within a few weeks, some people experience chronic sinusitis, where symptoms last for three months or more.

Under the NHS Pharmacy First Service, our pharmacists can assist individuals aged 12 and over who are dealing with sinusitis symptoms. No appointment is needed, and we can provide:

  • Expert advice on symptom management
  • Recommendations for over-the-counter treatments
  • Prescription medicines if appropriate

When to Seek Pharmacy Support

If your sinusitis symptoms have lasted more than 10 days and you are experiencing at least two of the following:

  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Reduced or lost sense of smell (adults only)
  • Persistent cough during the day or night (children only)

Speak to one of our pharmacists before making a GP appointment.

Eligibility & Exclusions

While the Pharmacy First scheme provides convenient care, certain individuals will need to see their GP instead. This includes:

  • Pregnant individuals under 16
  • Those with symptoms lasting over 12 weeks
  • People with a weakened immune system (immunosuppressed individuals)

When to See a GP

If your symptoms persist or worsen beyond three months, are severe, or are limited to only one side of your face, it is best to seek further evaluation from your GP. Additionally, if pain relief isn’t helping or your symptoms become more intense, professional medical advice is recommended.
